Saturday 31st January 2009 - Serin surprise!!!...

Continuing the end of day finch theme from last week..the guys on No3 struck gold with Woolston's first Serin - a '5' female, normally a bird that is associated in the UK as being seen on the South coast such as Portland. Birds have been seen in the UK as recently as December 2008, so maybe this has been pushed farther North by recent southerly winds. Showing no signs of being in captivity (Serins are indeed rare in captivity only 23 having been registered by DEFRA in 2004), the bird was in good health and was released into the seed crop on No3.
Thanks to Steve Menzie for the photos shown.
On No1 bed sightings of note were 4 Pinkfeet, 2 Buzzard, 6 Snipe, singles of Yellowhammer and Tree Sparrow and 2 Sparrowhawks.
Ringing Totals - new
Greenfinch -6
Great Tit -2
Blue Tit -1
