Saturday 22nd November 2008 - Finch Surprise and No3 do well for duck..

I arrived on No1 at 06.20hrs, temp was 3degC rising to 5degC later. With the feeding station net open I then erected the birch nets, a Brambling flew over calling as I did so.
A Chiffchaff was flitting around the wet rides but evaded capture.
Around the feeding station 60 Greenfinch, 20 Chaffinch and a lone Yellowhammer were expected, a single Goldfinch was caught out of 2 seen.
John B & Tony D arrived after dawn to start preparing their Duck Traps for the Winter.

Surprise of the day was a Common (Mealy) Redpoll, female (pictured) which was caught alongside a Lesser Redpoll for comparison.
With a wing of 74.5mm and a bill of 7.1mm, body length 125mm it was within the size biometrics stated by Newton (1972 Collins) who gives wing length of flammea of between 72-78mm for males, 69-76mm for females. Lesser Redpoll (cabaret) 67-73mm and 63-69mm respectively.
It looked overall a bigger, paler bird than the Lesser.

Ringing Totals for the morning were -

Greenfinch -15
Goldfinch - 1
Lesser Redpoll -1
Common Redpoll - 1
Chaffinch -3
Reed Bunting -1
Blue Tit -1
Total = 23 new.

Keiran Foster and team on No3 Bed had a cracking morning with a catch 1st thing of 5 Teal (pics to follow)
